Christmas in Memphis

By Brian Kline | December 11, 2014

Imagine getting out of the December cold and into the warm climate of the birthplace of rock-n-roll. Come to see Graceland in Elvis style. Take in the Merry Yule on Beale Street. How better to spend the holidays than taking in the many musical shows spanning many genres that are going on for Christmas in Memphis?

Whether it's for the shows or for the expansive seasonal shopping or the BBQ or being delighted by the sight of the mighty Mississippi River rolling by, there is no place like Memphis for the holidays.

Santa and Other Events in Memphis

Santa has already made a few appearances in Memphis and is scheduled to make several more. Southern holiday hospitality is taken seriously in Memphis and you don't want to miss it this year. A few of the celebrations occurring are:

  • Children's Museum Red Carpet Christmas with visits from Santa Claus on December 13, and 20.
  • Ugly Sweater Run/Walk at Shelby Farms Park on December 21.
  • Memphis Zoo Lights throughout the month of December.
  • Shelby Farms Holiday Lights Show ongoing until December 28.
  • Enchanted Forest of Holiday Trees at the Pink Palace during all of December.
  • Memphis Botanic Gardens is putting on artificial snowy nights show every Friday and Saturday through December 15. Hot chocolate, spiced tea, and a giant snow globe are included.
  • Holiday decor and music at the Dixon Gallery from December 5 until the 21st.

The Christmas show must and will go on in Memphis just as it does every year. Be part of it!

Christmas Charity From Memphis

You can also be part of the wide spread Christmas charity that Memphis brings to the less fortunate. Operation Christmas Child of Greater Memphis works at meeting the physical and spiritual needs of children across the world. The Memphis Angle Tree program sponsored by the Salvation Army provides thousands of underprivileged children and seniors with holiday gifts such as bicycles, toys, clothing, and special-needs items to relieve family budgets too tight to allow for extras.

Do you have a family member or friend in Memphis that you find it difficult to find a Christmas gift for? Consider making a donation in his or her name to any of the many helpful charity causes the Memphis community supports:

  • Memphis Union Mission will send your family member or friend a Christmas card in appreciation of your donation.
  • The Holiday Project strives to have community members visit seniors and others in nursing homes during the holidays.
  • Toys for Tots encourages Memphis community members to donate a few toys to underprivileged kids.
  • Christmas Wish Programs is an all volunteer program enabling the public to share in the joy of giving and the opportunity to help build a brighter future for local children.
  • Support the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation by giving like a king.

There is certainly nothing like Christmas in Memphis. Memphis is a musical city and to prove it, the song "Christmas in Memphis" has remained popular since first being recorded in 1985.
