Ideas to Take a Boring Yard to the Next Level

By Eileen OShanassy | February 13, 2017

Naturally, your indoor home improvements are often higher on the priority list than outdoor improvements and the yard often gets neglected. Luckily, there are a few simple things homeowners can do to make their yards look a little more impressive. In addition to removing unwanted materials from the yard, homeowners should also consider these landscape design ideas for making your yard much more livable.

Grass Greatness

Sprucing up and maintaining the lawn should start by removing unwanted materials from the top of the soil. Thatch (i.e. dead grass) builds up around the roots of the living plants and its removal allows air and water to flow through the soil more effectively. You also consider adding a layer of fresh fertilizer and keeping the grass maintained at a slightly taller height (at least two inches). Taller grass means longer roots, making it harder for weeds to sprout.

Soil Quality

The ground often gets packed down, and it would benefit the soil to be aerated. Lawn care companies say a simple tool to puncture holes into the ground will allow a better flow of air and water to the soil. Additionally, when removing thatch, it is best to leave a little behind (to protect the root zone).

Make Unique Flowerbeds

Traditional flowerpots aren’t the only things than can hold a plant. Homeowners could add some unique style to their yards by experimenting with untraditional flowerbeds. Plant perennials and annuals that come back each year for some variety and to give yourself less work each spring.

Adding Lighting

Homeowners may desire to add lighting to their yard. A well-lit yard is ideal for creating a cozy environment for guests. To save on electricity, glow-in-the-dark objects (like flowerpots) could be a nice way to improve the look of the yard as well.

Add Water Features

Adding Garden Decor Water Fountains or constructing a small pond could serve as a focal point for the backyard. Homeowners could consider other water features, but they should expect to spend a lot more time installing it and maintaining it throughout the year.

Fireplace

Having a fireplace can create a cozier atmosphere and could also make the yard more accessible during the winter months. You could also opt for an open-air fire pit for summers filled with smores.

Whether backyard plans include building a beautiful garden, making a place for gatherings, or beautifying a spot in paradise, simple steps can be taken to make the desired landscaping improvements. Homeowners can make additional improvements with a little more work and little more money. People who make the time will see their yard transform into their ideal environment. They may even feel inspired to start growing some of their own food.
