Designing your home can be one of the most difficult projects you will ever take on, unless you have some help from the professionals. However, everyone cannot afford to have an interior designer come in and style a room for them.
We are going to give you some great tips that will help you to achieve the look you want, and more importantly, avoid the look you don’t want in your home.
Determine your style
When someone says this to a client, they are normally met with a blank stare. But, there is an easy way to determine your style. Head to your closet. Are most of your clothes casual or trendy? Do you own a lot of clothes you could wear to a formal dinner, or do you dress up a basic shirt and slacks with a cool jacket and go on your way? If your clothes are chic, perfectly fitted and accessorized, your style is more formal. If your clothes are more casual (you can dress them up enough or take them down enough for stopping for a beer and watching the game at a neighborhood pizza joint, you are more casual.
Determine what you do not like
If the thought of a formal sofa and loveseat, crystal candle holders, and a champagne flutes give you the willies, get away from that design. If flowers and overstuffed chairs remind you of your grandmother’s home, back away from the flowers quickly.
Pro’s bumping into each other
If you make furniture for a living, the bigger and more pieces that go with it, the more money you make. If you build homes for a living, you have X number of features to fit into a certain amount of square footage. This may mean a smaller living room that is combined with an area for an office or a separate seating area.
What this means is, the furniture you may want, might not look good in your home. So when you shop, you must shop with style and size in mind.
A few awesome pieces to add class to a room
Consider your kitchen area. Select cabinets that give you the space you need, without overpowering the room. Now add a crystal or chrome vessel sink with a matching overhead light. Keeping everything minimal and adding just a few special pieces looks very professional, and it is functional!
Start with the floor
Always start with the floor. There are many options and they are the main wow factor in your home. If you want hardwood, stone, tile, wall-to-wall carpet, or antique rugs, you must choose the floor first. Then you draw from the colors of the floor selection.
Stick with your theme
It is okay, even chic, to have one or two item that just seems to belong to another era. A beautiful vase or a special painting. But if you mix and match your decor, it will look like a garage sale special.
Color family and contrasts
If you selected a cream-colored flooring in the living room, you should stay within that family. But that does not mean you must paint your walls cream, use cream window coverings and add cream throw pillows to the sofa.
You choose a color in the cream family and add a contrasting color to give your room a professional look.
Concussion
A pro designer will make any home fit those who live in it. There is no wrong style. You can do this too. Look up the latest designs online. Think of a home or hotel you stayed in that made you feel right at home. Don’t try to buy every item you like. Instead, buy a few items you love and build around them.
