Acreage is Important: Is Your Ranch in Need of a Property Upgrade?

By Jamie Richardson | February 3, 2018

No matter what kind of livestock you choose to raise, the size of your ranch is the final judge when it comes to profitability. That is why many ranchers are moving their operations to larger horse ranches for sale in the area. Just like a goldfish in a tank, their business growth is being limited by the size of their environment.

When is it time to move on to greener pastures?

One clue to whether or not it is time for you to consider a larger property is demand. If you already house twenty head of horses and have twenty more clients pushing for space, then you need to take a property upgrade into consideration. Below are three questions you should be asking yourself in this situation.

1. Do I have the staff to handle the service demand?
2. Do I currently have the property space to handle the demand?
3. Are there larger properties available that would suit the upgrade?

Answering questions and making inquiries is important

If you have adequate staff to handle another twenty horses, then you are already prepared in that area. However, if you do not, you may want to take a deeper look at your business plan and see whether this is a chance to can make right now. If additional staff are a feasible option, then you're certainly ready to consider a larger property to suit the service demand.

If you already have a reasonable space and could reorganize the property a bit to suit the demand, then obviously you should be considering doing so. However, many horse properties cannot be reorganized so easily. There are existing barns, arenas, and other outbuildings that would be costly to move or renovate. In this case, you should be contacting a professional and looking into ranches for sale in your area.

Once you've contacted a professional and determined what properties are available, be sure to tour each one and get a walking view of how your operation would fit in. Are there adequate outbuildings? Is the current facility already equipped with everything you will need? Is there enough pasture space and water available? All of these are keys to whether a new property will truly work for your business.

Making the final decision and putting your plans into motion

Once you've found a property that works well for your plans, you can begin the process of purchasing the property and moving your business. This is a large step for any business, but more-so for those moving a horse ranch. Be sure to contact insurance companies, veterinarians, and other services ahead of time to ensure that everything transfers smoothly. This is especially necessary with veterinary records, as you won't want to spend time later having things moved after-the-fact.

Finally, enjoy your new property! Growth and change are essential for any business and the satisfaction of being able to meet the demands of your clients is sure to keep a smile on your face every day.
