Chase will give customers $1K if it fails to close a mortgage in 21 days

By Mike Wheatley | February 22, 2019

Chase bank reckons it can now close on mortgage applications within just three weeks, and is so confident of its claim that it’s willing to cough up $1,000 if it fails to do so.

The offer is being made via Chase’s new “Closing Guarantee” program for existing customers, the Houston Chronicle reported. The program is available to Chase customers who have a checking account, credit card, or car loan with the bank. Customers must naturally also be using Chase as their mortgage lender. Those who successfully apply for a mortgage are guaranteed a closing within 21 days, and if it doesn’t do so, customers will be compensated with a grand in their pockets, Chase said.

“We’re here to help our customers get into their new homes as fast as possible,” said Sean Grzebin, head of mortgage originations for Chase Home Lending. “Our Closing Guarantee underscores our dedication to our customers and what matters to them. We want to reward our loyal Chase customers looking to buy a new home – with competitive rates, a chance to earn Ultimate Rewards points, discounts, and now the edge on speed.”

The 21-day window starts on the same day that the borrower successfully completes their mortgage application, Chase said.

“All the customer has to do is submit any financial documentation that Chase doesn’t already have plus a purchase agreement,” officials continued. “Then, Chase will close the loan on or before the contract closing date or pay the buyer $1,000.”

The offer is being made available to new, residential first-lien mortgage applications that were submitted to the bank from February 5, 2019.

Chase isn’t the only bank to introduce a quick-close mortgage program. Another lender, loanDepot, promises that its digital mortgage service will close on successful applications within just eight days, for example. It seems that fast closing times are now being used as a marketing tactic.

Chase’s loans don’t close quite so fast, but the 21 day guarantee is twice as fast as the average loan. Most mortgages take around 45 days to close, the Houston Chronicle reported.
