Childproofing Your Home: Which Areas Should You Pay More Attention To?

By Jamie Richardson | March 23, 2019

Now that you’ve bought a home for your family, it’s time to concentrate on the inside. If you have very young children, then you need to make your house childproof. As you may know from experience, kids are curious by nature. Once they know how to move around, whether it’s through crawling, walking, or running, they’ll go towards objects, people, and animals that interest them. They spend most of their time playing and exploring the various areas of the house. Most of what they do can become unsafe even if it all happens inside the house. Here are a few areas of the house where you should place more protection:

Garden and Garage

If you want a wide play place for your kids, the best choices are either the backyard or the front yard. However, you risk exposing them to outside elements such as the changing weather or small animals that may become dangerous. Certain plants can also spell danger if your children decide to eat or play with them. You should try putting in metal gates and fences to define your lot’s boundaries as well as protect your kids from outside mishaps. You should also keep children out of the garage at all times if it’s possible. Keep your gardening and auto equipment at a considerable height.

Living Room

Aside from their own bedrooms, kids love to stay and play in the living room where the television is as well as a wide space to roam around in. It’s also the place where you entertain visitors and place furniture such as display cabinets that contain trinkets and some fragile items. Safety latches and locks for these pieces help prevent your kids from reaching fine china or other display items that may have sharp edges or may break. If you can, anchor them in place as much as possible to prevent them from tipping over your child and crushing them.

Kitchen

This an important area that you should childproof at all costs since it has a large number of dangerous objects. Children love to climb and attempt to reach places and items with their hands, so a good rule of thumb would be to keep everything out of their reach. Essential items that they shouldn’t be able to grab at are the stove top, knives, plumbing, matches, and the dishwasher. Place the smaller objects in spots that are too high for them, while you can lock up the larger ones to prevent any accidental openings.

According to statistics, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home, and many of these are due to accidents in areas of the house that most parents think safe at first. When you see that everything looks stable, it doesn’t mean that they are. Keep in mind that as long as your children are still young, you should always make your home as safe as you can, being alert for any hazards in your house. When you’re consistent about it, you’ll be more confident that you and your family will enjoy living in peace in your residence.
