Debunking Artificial Intelligence

As pointed out by an article in techzone360.com, artificial intelligence is very much a trending topic. Numerous industries are beginning to see the possibilities of this technology, including healthcare, customer service, transportation, and manufacturing.

By 2020, it’s being predicted that an amazing 85% of customer interactions will not need human intervention. As artificial intelligence begins to affect HR and recruiting techzone360 has chosen to take a look at what is a myth and what is real. One common misconception is that intelligence equals consciousness, but in fact, this is a myth. While intelligence is the ability to solve problems, consciousness doesn’t have any practical applications and isn’t a scientific concept. In spite of this, it doesn’t mean that consciousness is impossible and there is extensive research into discovering the biological factors that make up human consciousness. At the moment, even the best computers in the world lack the conscious mind of a human and this also applies to artificial intelligence.

A second myth is that artificial intelligence can learn the same way as humans which has led to a common fear that artificial intelligence will be able to take over from human jobs when this isn’t true. The truth is that artificial intelligence learns by what is called machine learning which is very different from human learning. The article gives the example of a car, as it’s possible to teach a computer to recognize a car by showing examples, but that same computer will be unable to give you more information about the car, for example how it was made or what it is made of.

Yet another myth is that artificial intelligence is a robot capable of walking and talking, just like a sci-fi movie. Although there are certain types of robots being developed for industry, some of which are even modeled after humans, most artificial intelligence is invisible. Instead, it’s only recognizable when activated by voice recognition which is one of the most widely used artificial intelligence technology within business.

There’s little doubt that artificial intelligence could one day bring about beneficial changes to the average working day. It’s estimated by the International Data Corporation that the market for machine learning applications will be worth $40 billion by 2020 and that it will be capable of generating in excess of $60 billion worth of productivity improvements for business. At the moment it seems to be something we should welcome rather than fear.
