No Space? No Problem! Self-Storage as a Remedy

By Jamie Richardson | July 24, 2018

A lack of space can become an extremely uncomfortable scenario to deal with, especially when it comes to your home. And while there are a lot of ways that you could end up in a cramped house, there is only one result — disorder.

A shortage in space can be caused by two things. Either your house isn’t designed to hold that many people or belongings, or you simply have a bad habit of hoarding. Either way, space shortage is both a real problem and a waste — a waste because you could have had an extremely comfortable house to live in. And what’s more is that having a cramped house also means that you can’t get new thing because, well, there isn’t any space for them.

As the old adage goes “out with the old, in with the new”. The most common way to free up more space is to get rid of your old belongings. More often than not, this is the easiest bit. But there are some items that we simply cannot let go of, whether it’s by virtue of sentiment, confidentiality, or good old monetary value.

These items could come in the form of a memento of a person you truly cared for, a rare photo of a historic event, the very first pair of sneakers you bought with your own money, a family heirloom, or that ugly old couch that was handed down over the years. The one common theme between all of these is that you’re not willing to throw them away, much less sell them.

This is where self-storage and industrial shelving systems can be beneficial. There are a lot of companies, such as self storage Glasgow, that provide the remedy to this problem. But mind you, this isn’t a pill for your ill — this doesn’t just instantly eliminate your problem. There are a lot of factors to consider when getting a self storage unit.

You need to determine what items are you going to store. You have to decide whether an object is still worth keeping or would it be better to simply get rid of it. A great way to do this is to make a list of items that are essential to your ability to function daily. This differs between individuals and households.

Storage units also regulate access. This is another way of determining which objects are best stored. As a general rule, things you need for emergencies are best kept in your home for obvious reasons, while objects that are less crucial can definitely be stored in your unit. Take note that most storage units function much like regular offices. There’s a set window of time that they allow people to access their units.

Some storage units come equipped with climate control systems. These are used to help prevent the degradation of the things you store in your units. One way to determine if you need this add-on is to check your local climate. If you live in an area where temperatures can get extreme, then you definitely need to opt for a storage unit with climate control systems.
