Planning Ahead for a Happy New Year

By Mike Wheatley | December 23, 2011

Many real estate professionals are looking forward to 2012 with renewed optimism. Economists are predicting the stabilization of home prices and a rebound in sales – indeed, 2012 could be the best year for housing markets since the start of the recession.

As unemployment decreases, it’s hoped that housing markets will see an increased demand from buyers. So how can real estate agents prepare themselves for the year ahead?

Realtors should aim to position themselves at the forefront of next year’s much hoped for recovery, and to do so they need to focus on marketing themselves. Agents have tons of options for increasing their visibility in the local community – through billboards, signage in front of their listed homes, through newspaper ads and social media.

Another thing to do is to get yourself organized for the year ahead. There’s no time like the New Year for a good clean out! Update your contacts list – delete the old ones you no longer need, and check to see if any of them need updating.

Sort out the files in your computer as well. Free up your hard drive by trashing any old files you no longer need, and uninstall programs that you no longer use. Doing this will speed up your computer and see that it runs more smoothly. Check for upgrades – are any of the programs you use out of date? How about your antivirus?

As well as deleting all of the old stuff, how about adding some new tools to help you out as well? Modern technology has all kinds of innovations that can make the lives of a real estate agent easier. Check for new apps you can download onto your phone, send out some video newsletters, check for new ways of contacting your clients, such as through text messages.

Now’s also a good time to get your tax information organized, if you haven’t already done so. Make sure you have all your receipts filed neatly and any other information you will need. Doing this now can save you lots of stress during the spring when you’ll likely be much busier.

2012 promises to be a much more interesting year for real estate agents and real estate in general. By getting yourself organized and getting your name out there to the masses as early as you can, you’ll be well positioned to take advantage of any opportunities that come your way.

Merry Christmas!
