Qatar To Build World’s First “Semi-Submerged” Resort Hotel

By Mike Wheatley | September 1, 2011

Qatar has delightedly announced a hugely ambitious project, to construct an elaborately designed, semi-submerged luxury hotel and resort just off its coastline.

Giancarlo Zema Design Group, an Italian architectural firm, has been hired to design and oversee construction of the underwater hotel and resort complex.

Tentatively named “Amphibious 1000”, the project cost is estimated to exceed $500 million, and will be split between land and sea, featuring hotel rooms, residential apartments, office units, floating walkways, underwater marine-life galleries and a marine park. Slap bang in the middle of the resort will be an enormous central tower, with restaurants offering panoramic views of the Persian Gulf and Qatar’s coast.

Four semi-submerged hotel buildings, each one featuring 75 luxurious suites, will include private terraces. Underwater, in the resorts’ sea section, there will be underwater passages connecting the various buildings in the complex that grant residents and guests awesome views of marine life under the sea.

Also in the blueprint is a plan to have an array of electric-powered vehicles that guests can use to zip around the spacious resort. In addition, the designers also plan for 65 foot aluminum yachts that can be used to transport guests, each featuring an underwater viewing globe.

Underwater, there will be 80 luxury Jelly-Fish Suites, with private viewing decks and also communal underwater viewing lounges.

Giancarlo Zema Design Group announced that the planned resort was designed to “set new standards for the ideal of living harmoniously with nature.”
