Should You Replace the Carpet Before Selling?

By Tammy Emineth | May 13, 2019

If your carpet is looking or feeling like it is old and tired it may have you itching to rip it all out and replace it. There is a possibility that all your carpet really needs is a good professional deep cleaning. To find out if your residential carpet can be saved with professional carpet cleaning read on.

Should You Replace the Carpet Before Selling?

Is Your Carpet 10 Years or Older?

If your carpet is older than ten years it may be time for a replacement. The lifespan of your carpet depends upon the type it is and how well it has been cared for over the years. Cheaper construction grade carpet is only meant to last about five or so years whereas high-end wool carpet can last longer than 10 years with the best of daily care.

If you are noticing ripples, wrinkles, color fading, bald spots, and other signs of wear and your carpet is up there in age it is probably time to replace the carpet.

Is the Carpet Matted Down?

If your carpet is made of nylon or Sorona fibers a professional cleaning can bring life back to it. You may be surprised at how your carpet can look almost brand new after a professional carpet cleaning.

On the other hand, if your carpet is made of something other than nylon and there are areas that look flat and tired like say the hallway or the stairs it may be time for some new carpet. Polyester carpet especially is past its prime once it has begun to matt down. A cleaning, unfortunately, will just leave you with clean and flat carpet.

Are There Permanent Stains?

You may be surprised to find that many stains that seem permanent because you were unable to remove them with your own efforts can be lifted out of your carpet with the help of a professional cleaner. Not all stains are removable, but many stains are. It is worth the lower cost to try professional carpet cleaning and stain removal before taking on the larger cost of replacing the carpet.

Is the Carpet a Different Color?

Over time carpet can begin to take on a different hue than it had when it was purchased; this can be for a couple of different reasons from sun damage to a layer of dirt. If your carpet is a less vibrant hue than it was before and you have never had it cleaned you should start with a good cleaning first. You may be surprised at the way a deep cleaning can bring your carpet back to life.
