Six real estate TED talks you have to watch

By Mike Wheatley | April 10, 2015

Looking to fill a few minutes with some potentially industry-changing ideas? Your answer may be sitting in the TED archives. TED, a nonprofit that looks to spread ideas, often through short-form videos from thought leaders in every industry, has a number of options for real estate pros who want to learn about options for changing the way we interact with neighborhoods, property, and development projects.

Here's a selection of TED Talks that address new ideas in the real estate or development industries.

1. How to revive a neighborhood: with imagination, beauty and art (March 2015)

Artist and activist Theaster Gates explains how culture can be a catalyst for social transformation in economically depressed neighborhoods.

2. There’s a better way to die, and architecture can help (October 2014)

Architect and urban designer Alison Killing looks at how the built environment of hospitals, cemeteries, and homes influence the way our culture sees the experience of death.

3. How we can predict the next financial crisis (June 2013)

Didier Sornette and his Financial Crisis Observatory have plotted a set of early warning signs for unstable, growing systems, tracking the moment when any bubble is about to pop.

4. Architecture for the people by the people (Feb. 2013)

What if regular citizens could design and build their own houses? Designer Alastair Parvin presents the concept behind the open-source construction kit known as WikiHouse.

5. Retrofitting suburbia (January 2010)

Ellen Dunham-Jones outlines what she sees as our society's next big sustainable design project, wherein we rehab dying malls, re-inhabit dead "big box" stores, and return unused parking lots to thriving wetlands.

6. How architectural innovations migrate across borders (June 2013)

Architect Teddy Cruz uses examples from a Tijuana slum to show how new ideas about urban development can come from places of scarcity.
