Take Your Home From Drab to Fab

By Mike Wheatley | March 21, 2012

The spring buzz has hit many areas of the US, including a large portion of the Midwest where there have been unseasonably warm temps and through the midst of all that there are more and more homes for sale.  In the scurry and flurry of March madness people everywhere are getting into the spring mindset and breaking out of wintertime blahs.  Here are a few tips on making your home go from drab to fab in no time!

Color, Color Everywhere!

And we’re not talking about red and green!  Take down those holiday decorations already and get ready for sunshine. Especially for those that are listing their homes for sale, now is the best time to get ready to dress up your home for the season.

DIY project:  pick a wall to accent and make it shine with wall-to-wall decal tiling.  Easily removable, quicker and less messy than a paint job and depending on the complexity of the design, you can have the entire project done in less than an evening.  Try companies like Blik.com that have several types of wall tiling, decals and graphics.

The Sound of Spring

Nothing is more spring-like than chirping birds, rustling trees just beginning to bud and the sound of people starting to come out after long winter hibernation.  Bring out more sounds of spring by putting up wind chimes in your front porch, on the deck or near the kitchen window. Birdhouses are another signature springtime motif that not only look great but also cheer up the space with bird song.

Design project: create an entryway focal point with several birdhouses of varying sizes, shapes and colors.  You can either stay within a common theme like shabby chic (distressed and antiqued wood houses) or create a monochromatic look.  Guests (and potential buyers if you’re selling the home) will love the cheerful welcome.

Three-Dimensional Design

Textures like neutral linens with hand-painted ethnic designs or spring prints will add a completely new dimension to your home without breaking your bank.  Add splashes of bright hues in different textures to create depth and excitement in your design.

DIY project: using old shower curtains, drapes, blankets and other textiles that have some touching “pop” to them, make some basic pillows in a kaleidoscope of sizes and shapes.  Highlight your main living areas or small nooks in your home with these 3D accents for an easy-to-manage weekend makeover.

What’s That Gorgeous Smell?

Get your outdoors and inside blooming – it’s time to put away all those pine cone and cinnamon potpourris and holiday baskets and bring in lavender, linen and spring scents!  Flowers in vibrant hues and enticing fragrances are a great way to spruce up the place and update it for the new season.

Quick tip: Plant several rows of annuals in a stacking flowerboxes along your driveway for a scented walk as you head inside.  Inside, set up a large bouquet of simple blooms in every living space – keeping with your colors of your décor.

Whether planning on spending many years in their homes or expecting to place homes for sale in the upcoming warmer months, now is a great time for homeowners to infuse springtime splendor in houses everywhere!
