Louisville Kentucky: The Gateway to the South

Louisville is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, located along the border between Indiana and Kentucky on the banks of the Ohio River.

Known as the “Gateway to The South”, Louisville is influenced by both Southern and Midwestern culture, offering a great lifestyle for residents and an exciting place to visit.

Louisville has been ranked at 87.9 out of 100 in terms of affordability, making it a great place for families in search of affordable housing, great schools and a good quality of life.

Housing market

The housing market in Louisville is strong, especially for homes priced below $400k, which are routinely selling in two months or less.

On the whole, as of the second quarter of 2018, these sellers are getting almost 100 percent of their asking price, which points to a limited supply and increasing demand.

Demographics

The Louisville/Jefferson County area is home to over half a million people, more than half of them between the ages of 18 and 65.

Homeowners comprise a large proportion – nearly 60% – of individuals living, working and raising their families in the Louisville region.

Education

There are 162 public, 98 private and 27 post-secondary schools in the area. For those parents who choose to homeschool their children, the regulations are simple and easy to comply with.

The average student to teacher to ratio is low at 16:1, and the average test scores ratio is at 40%. By comparison, Kentucky as a whole is at 47% while the nation is at 49%.

Shopping

Residents have access to a wide variety of shopping options to meet their needs.

Fresh, organic produce is available at farmers’ markets in a number of different locations across the city. Galan’s Meat Market and Deli offers a variety of selection of fresh meats while the very popular Lucky’s Market offers a wide selection of organic meat and produce at reasonable prices.

While there are chain stores such as Walmart, specialty stores abound in Louisville, giving residents a lot of options for their gift giving and general household needs.

Industries

Louisville, with its mild climate and accessibility to river transport, has historically been an agricultural and mining state. In recent years, however, the city has diversified its economic base, adding manufacturing of durable goods such as cars and appliances.

It’s also adding hi-tech and skilled labor employment opportunities.

It was ranked #1 in 2003 by Entrepreneur magazine as the “Best City for Small Business and Growth”, and 2nd in a list titled “Top 25 Best Cities for Entrepreneurs.”

Some fortune 500 companies calling Louisville home include:

  • Yum! Brands, Inc. (Kentucky Fried Chicken)
  • Kindred Healthcare
  • Humana Inc.
  • Ford Motor Co. (Explorer, Sport Trac, Mountaineer, commercial light trucks, F-Series pickups)
