A majority of consumers have reported that their first introduction to smart home technology comes after receiving it as a gift, according to a survey of 600 U.S. homeowners performed by Scripps Networks Interactive.
The survey also found that most consumers quickly fall in love with smart home tech, saying it should ideally be as inconspicuous as possible but can also assist with family tasks or add an element of fun when it’s used.
Almost 75 percent of survey respondents said they enjoyed having smart home technology to assist with their daily lives. Some 93 percent added that the primary benefit of incorporating smart home tech was the peace of mind it provides. Also, 85 percent said they use their smart home tech for personal tasks or simply for the enjoyment it provides. Another three quarters said they believe the technology even helps them to be better parents.
The survey also found that there are three life events that can trigger purchases of smart home technologies. These include moving into a new home, renovating a current home, and seeing an increase in disposable income. However, most consumers said they first experienced using smart home tech after being given a device as a gift. “Consumers report that receiving (and giving) tech-related gifts feels like a recommendation from a friend,” the survey found. “Personal recommendation is the No. 1 source of inspiration for smart home products.”
Smart-home companies are targeting the kitchen for more connected gadgets, from smart appliances to voice assistants. The smart-home technologies topping the list for respondents include small kitchen appliances, automated cleaning devices, and voice-operated devices.
