Community Connection: Kris Thorkelson’s Vision for My Place Realty

By Allison Halliday | September 1, 2018

Kris Thorkelson is a Winnipeg-based entrepreneur with over twenty years in the retail pharmaceutical industry. Most recently, he ventured into an industry separate from pharmacy – real estate. Attracted to the industry for its hands-on approach to serving clients, he and his team founded My Place Realty, a property management company specializing in finding the perfect home or apartment for Winnipeg residents.

My Place Realty matches quality Winnipeg homes with tenants through its online system and team of property management professionals. The company was started in 2016 and has since grown rapidly to include an inventory of 1,400 apartment units.

My Place Realty seeks to provide a modern-day real estate service in part by focusing on its digital presence. Their website is frequently updated and features a list of apartment vacancies in Winnipeg as well as many rental suites. The website also provides resources for tenants, such as tenant forms, testimonials and information on current open houses.

When launching the company, Kris Thorkelson and his team set out with a vision: he saw it possible that My Place Realty would lead the industry in providing quality multi-family houses and apartments that residents could be proud to call home. Part of that vision was to integrate the business within the community and find ways that it could support and sustain it.

In accordance with that mission, My Place Realty has already built partnerships with a number of local businesses, some even participating in a benefits program, which includes a discount rate with MTS Services and an early renewal bonus for My Place Realty tenants. The company hopes to continue to maintain a focus on building strong ties within the community by finding new partnerships and continuing to give back through community events.

For Kris Thorkelson, giving back to the community is a value that needs to be sustained.

“When running an organization, investing time in your community is one of the most important things you can do to build trust and a strong community network,” says Thorkelson. “As a property management company, we provide homes to many people in the Winnipeg area. It’s very rewarding to see happy tenants.”

My Place Realty is looking to define a new standard in property management by striving for excellence in purchasing, renovating, customer service and proactive leasing multi-family homes. The company runs on a strict set of goals meant to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction and believes that it should not be difficult for new tenants to find out what the service is like in certain apartment building prior to moving in.

Much like in the pharmaceutical industry, Kris Thorkelson learned that the real estate industry is about striving for a level of excellence that helps people reach a higher quality of life. With more than twenty-five years of building and leading businesses, he is well experienced in helping people do just that.
