Figures from the US Census Bureau and the HUD show that the seasonally adjusted annual rate of nationwide housing starts rose to 896,000 units in July. Multifamily construction increased compared to the previous month, while single-family construction declined slightly compared to June.

While many Americans believe that homes in previous eras were better built than those constructed today, it is a misconception. There may be wonderful features in that early Victorian home, and it may have been well constructed, but the simple truth is that America’s homes today are the best built in history. Talk to your local fireman and he will tell you that the quality of newly built homes has almost put them out of business. Fires do not start and do not spread as quickly in a new home as they once did.

A report released last week by the National Association of Realtors suggests the housing market for 2011 may be a lot better than previously expected. Existing home sales are up again, and investment in new construction stock is up as well. With jobs and other variables stabilizing, it seems as if the overall outlook is very positive for 2011.
