Family Housing: How To Find A New Home For You And Your Kids

By Kara Masterson | April 7, 2017

Finding a great, new family home can be a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. While at first it may seem as if there are plenty of amazing options out there, it can be nearly impossible for some families to find homes in their desired neighborhood, with their desired amenities and for an affordable price. Families are encouraged to check out these four tips for finding a new home for a family with kids.

Check What Is Affordable
Unless one is a member of the small minority that can afford to buy a home with cash, the head of household will want to check into financing. According to Parents at parents.com, preapproval is wise because it gives family a good estimate of how much they can afford while also giving the home seller confidence. Some lenders even offer homeowners cash incentives for getting a mortgage through them.

Consider the School District
Families with school age children will want to choose a neighborhood that is within their desired school district. School district scores and standings can vary widely, making it important for parents to check a state education website or School Digger to find information about class sizes, test scores and more.

Determine Priority Features
Before starting a house hunt, families need to determine what their must-haves are according to the National Association of Home Builders at nahb.org. For example, some families may want all the bedrooms on one floor, a second-floor laundry room or a large yard. Once families start house hunting, it can be easy to get carried away with other fun features that may be out of their price range.

Work with a Realtor
Realtors can be lifesavers when it comes to finding a home. They will be the first to know when a popular house comes on the market and can go to bat for a family who is bargaining for a house along with several other potential buyers. Realtors can also help families find the most home for their money, determine if a house is worth the asking price and give advice about neighborhoods.

Families should not be discouraged if their first desired home falls through. As the housing market rises throughout most of the U.S., increasing numbers of desirable homes are appearing for sale every day. With a bit of patience and a discerning eye, families with kids can find the home of their dreams.
