How to Save Money After Moving into A New Property

By Eileen OShanassy | February 8, 2017

Moving to a new property can be very expensive on its own. There are many expenses involved that can really add up. Moving is stressful and it's easy to lose track of unnecessary spending along the way. If you want to save money during and after your move, there are some easy tips to follow to help keep your expenses to a minimum.

Purge Possessions

One of the easier ways to save money during a move to a new property is by getting rid of stuff you don't need beforehand. This will mean less items need to be packed, shipped, and unpacked. Aside from saving money on the shipping, you may be able to sell some items that are in good working condition for some extra moving money.

Ship Cars

Many people don't realize how much it can actually cost to drive a car to your new home. If you are moving a very long distance, you can expect to pay a lot of money in gas and tolls. Additionally, there will be unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle which may cost you on repairs in the months to follow once you have finished moving. Having your car shipped is a simple process that can take the stress off having to figure out how to get your car to your new property.

Book Moving Services Early

Finding a great deal on your moving expenses can be as easy as planning ahead. Moving companies can get very busy during certain times of the year and planning to hire a moving company early will give you a better chance to compare costs and get the best deal. Also, booking for your moving company in advance will give you more time to figure out what you would like to be included in your service.

Ask for Help

While it can be easy to just spend money on hiring a moving company to help you pack, move, and unpack, it can be much less expensive to ask for help from friends and family. Taking time to pack up items yourself and with the help of others can be done quickly and for less money. Even if you still use a mover, you will save money by already doing the packing and dismantling of your furniture.

With a little bit of planning in advance, moving into a new property doesn't have to be too expensive. If you are willing to put in some time and effort or get help from friends and family, you will be able to avoid the costs of hiring help. The stress of moving can make it too easy to spend money on unnecessary things.
