5 Security Features That Raise Your Home's Value

By Dixie Somers | March 24, 2017

Homeowners are always looking for a way to increase the value of your home, and security is one of the best ways to make that happen. No buyer puts their safety last, which means many are more willing to place more value on a secure home. Adding these five security features might allow you to list your home for more than the competition, which is precisely what you’re looking for.

Pool Protection

If you are a homeowner with a pool, the best thing you can do is provide security. If you don’t have a gate around the pool, get one. An electric pool cover that prevents anyone from being submerged in water if they fall in is always welcome. Door alarms that beep or ring anytime any door leading to the pool area is open is a helpful security feature in any home. Parents with kids might appreciate being alerted anytime the doors to the pool patio are opened in case they are not in the same room as their children.

Video Camera Doorbells

These are fairly new and very trendy, and homeowners love them. Imagine being able to see who is standing at your door on an app when you’re home or not, and imagine being able to speak to that person when you are locked inside your home or even at work. You can scare off burglars, get good photos and video of anyone at your home, and you can even direct your delivery man to leave your packages in a specific area if you’d like. This is a big feature for buyers.

Motion Lights

The exterior of any home should be well-lit all the time, but motion sensor lights are a wonderful addition. Real estate agents recommend them for homeowners, and buyers love knowing that they can detract burglars and anyone with ill intent from their home if light begin to turn on as they creep up on the house in the night. They don’t want to be seen by anyone, and lights alerting people there is movement outside is a big burglar deterrent.

Driveway Gates

Security gates are a wonderful feature for several reasons. Not only does this allow you to make it more difficult for unwanted guests to enter your home provided they haven’t a code, it also keeps kids inside the yard. Prospective buyers are more likely to appreciate this security feature than any other.

Smart Appliances

Smart appliances might not sound much like a security feature, but they are. You can purchase smart outlets and appliances that allow you to control your home from an app. Imagine realizing you left the iron plugged in after leaving for work. Instead of turning around, you can use an app on your smart phone to turn off the smart outlet in which it’s plugged to eliminate power. Smart appliances allow you to do the same, as well as start cooking before you arrive home by preheating your oven and making life easier in general.

Buyers want to spend more money on features that keep them safe as well as make their home easier to manage. With so many millennials addicted to technology looking to purchase homes, you’ll find buyers are more willing to pay more for your house when you upgrade your smart features, tech, and security.
