During Divorce: Saving Time and Money

By Jamie Richardson | April 30, 2019

The cost of your divorce can depend on a number of factors, one of which is the way you handle or act during the proceedings. If you want to save time, effort, and money, it is only important to think twice and evaluate your decisions. Do take note that emotions can sometimes take you over, which can then compromise the result of the settlement or turn it against your favor.

Albuquerque divorce attorneys share a few things that can help you save time and money during the proceedings:

Work with the right lawyer

This means picking a lawyer that is experienced in family law or divorce. Don’t fall into the trap of hiring someone just because they offer cheap services, but does not specialize in family law. You need a reliable divorce attorney who knows the divorce laws in your state to protect your rights and guide you throughout the process.

It is also advisable to find a lawyer whom you feel comfortable working with. Avoid those who come off as arrogant, as working with someone like that can make you feel hesitant to ask questions. You also have to choose the right lawyer the first time, as changing or hiring a new one can be costly.

Know your goals

What do you want to achieve in the settlement? Do you want to keep the marital home or get the primary custody of the kids? It can be beneficial to list the things you want, but be sure to be realistic. Keep in mind that you cannot have everything and leave your ex with nothing, even if you believe that you are the better parent/spouse.

Making a list can help you determine the things that are worth fighting for. These include those that will benefit the kids and your future life as a single individual, as well as those that will ensure your well-being and security. You also need to give up some things, especially those that are replaceable.

Gather the necessary documents

Save some money and your lawyer’s time by gathering and preparing the legal and financial documents needed for the case. Apart from reducing the time and fees required to obtain them, doing this earlier will also give your lawyer more time to evaluate your case, including the assets and properties that can be an issue during the settlement.

Some of the documents you need include proof of income, bank statements, retirement or investment account statements, income tax returns, and others. You can check out this blog for a checklist of the documents needed.

Take the high road

If you blame your ex for the divorce, it is always tempting to get even. While this may bring you some joy or pleasure initially, it is only temporary and your wicked plans of revenge will likely backfire. This is because it will provoke more hatred and encourage your spouse to take revenge too.

It is best to compromise and consider what you’ll feel if what you’re thinking of doing is done to you. In most cases, it is better to negotiate solutions that will benefit everyone and help both of you start anew. You should also make decisions that focus on the best interest of the kids.

Don’t get caught up in the things that will drag your case and make it more expensive. Contact a reliable lawyer for legal advice and get support from friends or a therapist.
