By Guest Author | December 20, 2013

Now that the holidays are here, so many families are excited to once again fill their home and yard with a gorgeous exterior holiday lighting installation. From ambient lighting that gives your living room an ethereal glow to festive outdoor lanterns that make your home look even more welcoming, seasonal lighting is one of the best parts of the holiday season. However, once January rolls around, so many of us are sad to see our beautiful lights disappear for yet another year. Here are some tips on how you can incorporate festive lighting into your home year-round, without going overboard or being tacky.

Be Subtle - String lights wrapped around a garland along your staircase or mantle give a gorgeous glow, but they'd be tacky to keep up year-round. If you want the gorgeous ambiance of indoor lights without looking like you just forgot to take down your Christmas decorations, consider something subtle like indoor lanterns. They create a gorgeous and ambient glow, but they don't immediately scream "Christmas" or "Hanukkah."

Hide String Lights - If you love the glow that string lights provide, consider hiding the lights in a way where you cannot actually see the bulbs but can still enjoy their glow. String lights underneath bookshelves or dressers create a beautiful, soft glow, as do string lights strung around windows and concealed by translucent curtains.

Go For Non-Holiday Colors - Red and green lights scream "Christmas," but lights in hues like purple or blue don't necessarily have a "holiday feel." Purple lights are great for giving any space a girly and romantic feel, while blue lights at a modern and exciting touch. Find lights in colors that will match or accentuate the color scheme that you already have.

Change Your Entire Lighting Scheme - If the soft glow of your holiday lights are sorely missed the rest of the year, you might need to consider updating your entire lighting scheme. Avoid using your harsh overhead lights in favor of softer options like lamps or lanterns. Your space will feel cozier, and more importantly, you'll feel more relaxed and at ease in your space.

Great lighting and fun string lights and lanterns shouldn't just be enjoyed during the holidays. While you don't want to use lights in colors or designs that are distinctive to the holiday season, you can indeed keep lights up all year. Anyone can follow these easy tips and tricks to enjoy these beautiful and ethereal lighting options all year long.
