Kingsley Manor Plans LA Fashion Week Rooftop Show with Models Aged 68-98

By Mihaela Lica Butler | March 18, 2024

Los Angeles-based retirement community Kingsley Manor cordially invites the public to attend its inaugural fashion show on Thursday, March 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Participating in this prestigious occasion in conjunction with Los Angeles Fashion Week, ten Kingsley Manor residents ranging in age from 68 to 98 will elegantly walk the runway from the picturesque rooftop patio, which features the renowned Hollywood sign as a backdrop.

Attendees will be granted the opportunity to observe the most recent works of burgeoning designers who have incorporated an elegant senior aesthetic. Quite possibly the finest jazz and blues ensemble in Los Angeles will contribute to the ambiance of the evening, while a variety of exquisite hors d'oeuvres will round out the experience. For this exclusive and fashionable event, tickets are available for purchase via Eventbrite, with a restricted number of seats available and FREE admission.

Realizing the scarcity of senior individuals in the fashion industry served as the impetus for Life Enrichment Director Michael Essex to coordinate the fashion performance.

"When I get older and become an elder, I still want to be fashionable. I wanted to bring awareness to that because I believe that the elderly still have a voice in fashion," he said in a public announcement.

Essex recruited 10 Kingsley Manor residents to participate in the show. For this first event, the community sourced clothing from nearby department stores for the models to wear and hired stylists to get them ready for the runway. In addition, a rising designer will present and highlight his clothing, with the garments being worn by dancers throughout the show. Essex has a strong passion for future events that feature designers who can craft unique clothing for the residents.

Highlighting the importance of fashion for people of all ages and the industry as a whole, Essex emphasized that dressing up brings joy and a sense of timelessness to one's life. He also underlined the significance of industry professionals acknowledging the timeless quality of style, even as they grow older.

Imagining this show as the first of many to come, Essex aims to create a regular platform for fashion exhibitions.

This first one is just to give an awareness and let people know that this is something that residents would love to do. Hopefully next year, we could get more people to be involved.
