Memphis Bass Pro: One of a Kind

By Brian Kline | May 14, 2015

Bass Pro opened its newest store in downtown Memphis last week. You might not think that another sport shop opening is newsworthy but this is no ordinary sports shop.

The new Memphis Bass Pro takes up the 32-story pyramid building that was previously the game arena for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis men's basketball team. At the top is an awesome 360-degree view of Memphis that includes the Mississippi River from the outdoor observation deck modeled after the Grand Canyon skywalk.

Memphis Bass Pro is Much More Than a Sport Shop

This sport shop features a 105-room hotel with some of the rooms resembling tree houses suspended among 100 foot Cyprus trees growing inside the pyramid. The exterior rooms have incredible views of downtown Memphis and the inside rooms over look the vast inside retail spaces. The hotel includes a full service spa and fitness center.

While the new Bass Pro building does cater mostly to outdoor enthusiasts, it has something for everyone in the family. There's 600,000 gallons of water filled with over 1,800 fish. The cypress swamp has alligator pools and duck aviaries. Another feature is the Ducks Unlimited National Waterfowl Heritage Center. Here you'll find displays of some of the highest quality duck related artifacts in the world and the center tells the story of Ducks Unlimited. It will also be bringing in various traveling exhibits. Tour groups are welcome during normal business hours.

Of course, any major attraction in Memphis has to include restaurants. Uncle Buck's Fishbowl and Grill features traditional American favorites. The center of Uncle Buck's includes an elevated bar and a bowling alley. The Lookout is located at the top of the Pyramid and features a full service restaurant and bar with a panoramic view of the city along with outdoor seating.

You Need to Experience it Yourself

There is also an indoor shooting range for pistols and archery, which is perfect for equipment like a new archery quiver. You can rent the equipment or bring your own. However, you can't bring your own ammunition. Of course, there are multiple hunting and fishing retail outlets for the outdoor enthusiast. One is the Beretta Gallery where you can obtain custom fittings and top quality firearms.

You may be sorry if you missed the grand opening because it was done with traditional southern hospitality. Among the highlights were country music's John Anderson, Animal Planet host Ernie Brown, Jr., bass angler Bill Dance, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, and 2015 Miss Tennessee Kiara Young. The free event featured an all-star cast of celebrities from the world of sports, entertainment, and the outdoors joining together to help Bass Pro Shops celebrate the opening of one of the most immersive, dynamic retail experiences in the world," Bass Pro said in a news release.
