Most Common Types of Emergency AC Repairs

By Jamie Richardson | July 7, 2023

When an air conditioning system malfunctions, you may not have enough time to schedule an appointment with a technician. Some problems require emergency repair service. Emergencies can often occur when minor issues go unchecked or when regular AC maintenance is neglected. Understanding the common types of emergency AC repairs can help you identify them before they become bigger problems.

Refrigerant Leaks

One of the most common AC problems is a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks can occur for several reasons, including normal wear and tear and corrosion. When your air conditioner has a refrigerant leak, you may notice hissing sounds, longer cooling cycles, and temperature fluctuation.

Refrigerant leaks can originate in more than one place inside the unit, making it challenging to find the source. If all the refrigerant has leaked out, the AC will not cool, and you will need emergency AC repairs

Broken Compressor

A failing AC compressor requires emergency repair. The compressor plays a vital role in circulating the coolant or refrigerant that absorbs heat and disperses it outside. Blocked refrigerant lines, improper lubrication, and electrical issues are some reasons that can cause an AC compressor to fail. When the compressor malfunctions, the AC can make strange noises, such as rattling or banging. A compressor failure can cause further damage to your AC, so it should be repaired as soon as possible.

Electrical Issues

The AC can release foul smells when a serious electrical problem has occurred in the unit. For example, if there is a burning stench from the AC system, it typically indicates a component of the system has burnt or there is an electrical issue, such as a short circuit. A burning smell from the AC requires an emergency AC repair. Keeping the AC running when it is emitting a foul odor could result in major damage or a fire hazard.

Clogged Drain Lines

The condensation that occurs when warm air passes over the cold evaporator coils is collected in the drain pan and removed from the unit through the drain lines. Signs of clogged drain lines include a musty smell from the AC unit, the inability of the AC system to blow cold air, or excessive moisture on the indoor unit. If the drain lines remain clogged, it can lead to excessive water damage. Call an HVAC technician for emergency repair if you notice any signs of a clogged drain line.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

Evaporator coils remove heat and moisture from the indoor air. When these coils get dirty, it can cause ice or frost to build up in the AC unit, which can restrict airflow and cause damage to the other components. If you notice any ice or frost build-up in the AC system, call a technician for emergency repair to prevent further damage.

Capacitor Problems

Improper voltage, overheating, or defective components can cause the AC capacitor to fail. As a result, the AC will struggle while starting up. Since the capacitor helps power the system, a malfunction can damage the AC's components. Capacitor problems should be addressed and repaired promptly.
