Richard Rendina Battle with Lymphoma and How it has Influenced his Property Management Concepts

By Jamie Richardson | July 25, 2018

Richard Rendina is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Rendina. The company has been managing Healthcare properties by helping hospitals handle all aspects of the development lifecycle. Since December 2006 he has steered the company to success overseeing the development of more than 1.6 million square feet of health care properties in 12 states.

His father Bruce Rendina was an acclaimed entrepreneur and philanthropists who died in 2006 of a brain tumor. After his death, he left the companies he founded to his sons Richard, Michael, and David.

Richard took over the strategic and operational functions of the company. He continued to develop his father’s Equity Participation Program which allowed physicians to own properties with a partner who would assume the risk on their behalf.

He successfully steered the company through the recession by applying creative solutions to assist hospitals in addressing their real estate healthcare needs. Rendina provides a full-service solution that includes all aspects of healthcare real estate development encompassing leasing, development, acquisition, and management. Since he took over he has overseen projects with costs totaling $325 million.

But Richard Rendina’s leadership has had its own fair share of challenges. In 2010 he discovered he had Lymphoma which he got after taking colitis medication. He managed to overcome the challenge by eventually beating cancer and getting back to real estate development.

His experience with Lymphoma inspired his resolve to get involved with organizations that help individuals, families, and communities that have been affected by cancer. He has been an active member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS is a charitable organization that is focused on funding research, finding cures and improving access to patients with lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease.

"The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the leading source of free, highly specialized blood cancer information, education, and support for patients, survivors, families and healthcare professionals. I know from personal experience how important this can be to those who are experiencing a cancer diagnosis” says Richard.

His personal struggles with cancer have also influenced some of his healthcare property management concepts. Having seen the benefits of Yoga and Acupuncture as complementary therapies alongside conventional medicine, he saw the need to assist hospitals to develop wellness services and alternative treatments.

The Chairman and CEO of Rendina also believes that these services help patients get better while introducing a new income stream for the medical facilities. Medical facilities need to be built to facilitate the integration of these services into their system.

Over the years Richard Rendina has received several awards including “Legacy Award” from Palm Beach County Medical Society and “Community Leadership Award” from South Beach Country Business Journal, amongst others.
