Tired of Your Home's Look? Here's What You Can Do to Change It

By Jamie Richardson | July 21, 2018

We all get to the point where we can't stand the look of our own house anymore. We see the same walls day in and day out, and the things that used to charm us now seem old or boring. Of course, you know that you can invest in a remodel and give the place an entirely new look. You could even expand or change the shape of the rooms if you like. But you just can't afford that.

Fortunately, there are many ways that you can update the look of your home without investing in a full remodel. Here are a few ideas:

Reface Cabinets and Replace Hardware
Bathroom and kitchen cabinets are usually at the top of the list when homeowners want to make changes. However, replacing cabinets and making other changes to these two important rooms can be very expensive. You can still get a new look by choosing new door and drawer fronts. For example, DeWils custom cabinets offer dozens of options for styles and colors. You can order any of these options for new cabinets or order to put on your old cabinets.

In addition to changing out the drawer and door fronts, make sure you replace the hardware, including knobs, pulls, and hinges. You can get an entirely new look for your kitchen or bathroom and save a lot of money in the process.
Alternatively, you could just repaint the cabinets and replace the hardware. You'll be amazed at how a simple coat of fresh paint can change the look of your cabinetry.

Replace the Floors
Flooring also has a big impact on the look of any room. Change the floors from dingy old carpets to marble tile and you'll see a drastic difference. But you don't have to upgrade to marble to see that kind of difference. Even changing out an old carpet for a new carpet in a different color or style can make a difference.

Get the most dramatic difference by choosing a different flooring type, especially something more modern and on trend like hardwood. You can even install the hardwood flooring yourself. If you choose tile, you'll be better off calling the professionals.

Buy New Furniture
Maybe your house has good bones and you're happy with the basic structure, but you still want a new look. You can give your home a whole new style by simply replacing the furniture and the artwork.

Go room by room to renovate the look. You may have a few staple pieces that you want to keep, but don't get too attached to items out of sentimentality. You won't be able to truly change the look if you hang on to too many older pieces. You can incorporate some items as accent pieces, but you'll need to make major changes if you want to notice a real difference in the look of your home.

Repaint the Walls
A new coat of paint can do wonders for both the inside and outside of your home. That's why repainting is often the first (and sometimes the only) thing that your realtor will recommend when you are staging your home to sell. Repainting can make your home look newer, but it can also change the look.

Consider how your kitchen would look if it was a deep purple instead of beige. You don't have to make such drastic changes, but the point is that you can make a room look entirely different just by giving it a different color. If you are on a very limited budget, consider just repainting your home to give it a fresh, new look.

Whatever you decide to do to upgrade the look of your home, be sure you are making good decisions. There are some jobs that you can do yourself, such as painting, but there are some jobs that are best left to the professionals, such as knocking down walls or doing electrical work. Decide on your budget, and then start with the most important jobs that will make the biggest impact first. You can soon have a beautiful new house that you love coming home to again.
