Which Fridge is Right for You?

By Guest Author | January 9, 2015

Home ownership is a wonderful achievement that every American should be proud of. A major change most consumers must deal with, however, when they move into their new home is what type of appliances to buy. While landlords provide appliances for their renters, homeowners must purchase their own items.

A quality refrigerator is a must-have for every homeowner. Your new fridge must last for years to come, and must be energy efficient. If you're in the market for a new fridge, use the following factors to help you decide which one is right for you.

Budget Before You Buy

Don't blow your entire appliance budget on one item. Most main stream refrigerators can cost between $300 and $2,000 or more. If you're only in the market for a modest home, don't go out and purchase a $6,000 fridge. Stick well within your means while leaving enough monetary room for a unit that has all the bells and whistles you're looking for.

Measure Before You Buy

From a two door side-by-side fridge to a unit with the freezer located at the bottom, refrigerators come all types of shapes and sizes.

Measure the space that you've set aside in your kitchen. Make sure to get another person to take measurements yet again to ensure everything is accurate. Head to the store with your measurements and choose two to three models which fit perfectly. Doing this will help you narrow down your choices.

Brand Is Important

While your home warranty will cover any type of refrigerator you purchase, try to leave out brands which you've never come across before.

Branded fridges are well known for a good reason: The top brands make quality products. Not all of the top brands are expensive and you'll have a good selection of five different names to choose from.

Water and Ice Dispenser Options

Water and ice dispenser fridges are great for saving time and money.

By purchasing this type of refrigerator, you won't have to worry about buying bottled water all the time, or you won't have to constantly refill the ice cube trays. The fridge does it all for you.

This type of model may cost a few hundred dollars more, but the price is well worth it in the future.

Energy Saving Refrigerators Are a Must

When shopping for a refrigerator, look for those that are Energy Star qualified. These types of fridges will help you save up to 20 percent on your utility bills.

Nearly every new refrigerator is Energy Star qualified. You can tell by looking for a sticker that says "Energy Star Certified".

Consider Door Swing Space

While your measurements may be perfect for the refrigerator itself, many people fail to realize the actual door swing space that's involved with using a fridge.

To make sure you have enough space for your fridge door to swing open, take the measurement of the walkway in front of the refrigerator space and make sure it's bigger than the door fridge itself. You won't have to worry about banging the door on an object every time you open it.

Built-In or Freestanding?

Do you need a built-in refrigerator or freestanding unit? This will all depend on the configuration of your kitchen and your personal preference.

Built-in units are perfect for homeowners looking for a flush, seamless look. They must be installed by a contractor and often require custom cabinet work around the edges. The door to the fridge itself is also custom built to fit in with the kitchen.

Freestanding units are cheaper than built-in fridges. These are perfect for first time home buyers and for individuals or families who are shopping with a tighter budget. You won't have to spend money for someone to install it, and the unit itself will be more affordable.
