A Short List of Unique Luxury Properties for Sale

By Phil Butler | January 2, 2019

2019 may well set a new luxury trend for being the year of unique property experiences. In an investment sector where everything has been done, bigger and more expensive will not necessarily define high-end sales. Here's a selection of out of the ordinary properties that may be the new definition of exclusivity.

A Beautiful London Redundancy

Archway Studios on Dartford Street in London is a £1 million pounds sterling family home and photography studio more or less inside a nineteenth-century railway viaduct in south London. The three-story contemporary home takes the definition of "unique" to a new level in its contrasting industrial steel exteriors and soft contoured interiors. The infill development of 1,600 sq. ft. has adjacent private rooms including two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a study.

Designed by Undercurrent Architects, the property won the London Architecture Awards House of the Year back in 2013. This property is a kind of poster child for what may be a mega-trend involving the use of redundant space in the urban environment. Nearby, Kennington and Elephant and Castle stations providing access to central London via the Northern and Bakerloo lines, as well as Overground services further afield.

The Muse

This amazing Australian development consists of only 42 residences designed with nature in mind. Situated in between two lush city parks, the apartments feature expansive Melbourne views. Everything vital in the city is nearby these tailored abodes priced starting at A$3.2 million Australian dollars.

Sales for The Muse began this past summer with the listing of the building's two-level, 10,700-square-foot penthouse, priced at a cool $45 million. This unique apartment has its own pool, a theater, game room, gourmet kitchen, steam room, and even a A$30,000 self-cleaning toilet.

The Muse residences are decked out in the highest quality in finishes and fixtures throughout, and each features expansive spaces with unbelievable views and natural light. All apartments have private basement garaging, most housing at least 3 cars.

A Santorini Cave?

This amazing property is actually a multilevel cave carved into the rock cliff of the world's most famous volcano destination. Made up of 5 basements of 45 sqm each, this Oia luxury property sits on a 400 sqm plot on the caldera of Santorini. Each unit comes fully furnished, so the new owner can truly arrive with no worries. All the usual suspects are here, but the unique aspect is the fact the villa(s) are situated in a truly "one of" location.

The main residence here is 108,40 sq.m. on the ground floor, and has a living room with kitchen 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a private swimming pool of 50 sq.m. Priced at €3.5 million euro, the property also has 6 parking spots, which come at a hefty premium on the island. And yes, the property does have its own chopper pad too.

Your Own Luxury Navy Base

This Charleston, South Carolina house redefines what unique waterfront luxury property means. Adapted from the remains of a former Navy degaussing station back in 2010, the stunning property is on the market with Christie's Real Estate for $7.95 million. 2 Concord Street is an iconic one of a kind property with an amazing one of a kind 240 foot private boat dock jutting out into one of America's most famous harbors.

The residence has a main house of almost 5,000 square feet adjoined by a guest house sitting atop massive concrete pilings over the water. From the back of the house, the owner and guests get one of the most amazing panoramas of Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter, The Yorktown, Ravenel Bridge, and the Historic Charleston Peninsula.  This unbelievable luxury property is unique for its re-design, but especially for its privileged location. This is one I am actually amazed it's still on the market.

Il Palazzetto - A Uniqueness of One

Situated in the absolute heart of Rome on Piazza Di Campitelli, the Palazzetto is a charming old-world property that dating back to the 16th century. This amazing 5-story property is decorated with frescos and sculptures from 1590. Painstakingly restored, the palace was originally desgined by the famous Italian architect and sculptor Giacomo della Porto (who also worked on St. Peter’s Basilica).

The 17,363-square-foot residence has 11 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. The video above from Hilton & Hyland, does this wonderful masterpiece more justice than my words can. The price is "on request" as you might imagine. Of course the list of rooms, amenities, artworks, and other details are far too massive for this report. Christie's has the best information for those who want to live in true splendor.
