Shannon Schmitz accepted the challenge saying, “Having known far too many friends who have had breast cancer, I deeply believe in this cause.”
During the National Anthem, the Express team players will be joined by twenty survivors and their children at each of their nine positions. Lana Russell, Sally Lee, Kathy Neu, Christi Davidson and Jennifer Wegmiller are amongst those invited to the event by Schmitz, and all are breast cancer survivors. Jennie Stahl has been selected to throw out the first pitch. Jennie is a long time breast cancer survivor and has dedicated her life to finding ways to help others with this disease learn to cope.
The Express players will be wearing special pink striped jerseys that have the breast cancer ribbon on their sleeve, and there is to be a silent auction for the jerseys that will be held by the players and coaches wives while the game is being played. There are various other items that will be included in the auction, including the chance to become ‘manager for a day” or the opportunity to be “bullpen coach or a game.” The auction will also feature several bats that have been autographed by well-known players.
It is easy to support this cause, and you can purchase tickets online. All you have to do is to view the Round Rock Express game schedule online, before clicking “buy tickets” for the game on Saturday July 27th against the Memphis Redbirds. You will see a special offer code box on the online order form, and it is important to enter the word “pink” using lowercase letters, as this will ensure your donation gets to Komen Austin. It is also a great idea to get there early, as the first 1500 will be given a free Pink in the Park t-shirt.
