The Best Smart Thermostat: Does NEST Need to be Worried about Ecobee4?

By Anita Cooper | January 30, 2019

The Ecobee4 may be the new kid on the block but it’s already getting rave reviews for its efficient household management abilities.

From taking notes to smart energy management, Ecobee4 is a serious player in the smart home technology field.

Features at a glance:

  • Easy to install
  • Remote sensor
  • Programmable sensors
  • Baseline settings for “home, away and sleep”
  • Alerts in case of high temperatures
  • Reminders for home maintenance
  • Flat touchscreen with backlight
  • Remote temperature and proximity sensor
  • Intuitive mobile and web apps
  • Displays time, indoor and outdoor when you walk past the thermostat
  • Blue light flashes to indicate it’s listening to you
  • Tracks humidity and energy usage
  • Built-in Alexa
  • Compatible with a range of smart assistants including:
  • Google Home
  • Google Assistant
  • Apple Homekit
  • Samsung SmartThings
  • IFTTT (If This Then That)
  • Amazon’s ESP feature

Instead of using a predictive algorhythm to set the right temperature, Ecobee4 uses motion/proximity sensors to help it decide whether or not someone is home.

This means no more cold fingers after hours on your laptop from the system thinking you weren’t home.

The Ecobee4 comes with a Power Extender Kit (PEK) which can be used to add the extra wire needed for the unit without needing a rewiring of your home’s HVAC system.

However, if you’re comfortable with wiring, you don’t have to use the PEK - it should only take about half an hour to install the thermostat.

Pros:

  • Quick installation
  • Works with multiple smart home assistants
  • Provides consistent temperature control

Cons:

  • Price - the Ecobee4 retails for $249

If this is a concern, or if you don’t need all of the smarts because you already own an Alexa, Ecobee does offer less expensive thermostats.

Opinion:

Your choice of smart thermostat will of course depend on what you need and want. While the Ecobee4 may not be as stylish looking as a NEST, it is a solid choice if you want something that works, is easy to set up and even easier to manage.
