Using Smart Technology to Protect Your Home

By Allison Halliday | March 25, 2016

Although for many of us the idea of owning a smart home may seem to be a little futuristic, a blog for Allstate Canada has pointed out that smart technology has the ability to make a home safer and to make it easier for a homeowner to look after and that it is worth looking at.

This includes the use of automated appliances and systems and devices in the home that are connected and are able to be centrally controlled. The very latest developments can protect you and your family and your home. These days there are enhanced locking systems that will not only deter burglars, but which can also keep records of when someone enters and leaves the property. With a smart lock, virtual keys to can be sent to visitors or to other people who need to gain access to your home, while your property can be unlocked from your smart phone. The appeal of this is easy to see, as you would be able to let in a repair man and lock up as soon as they leave without giving them access to your security system. This feature can also be extremely useful if a family member locks themselves out by accident, and when you are away from your home you will be able to continually check that your doors are locked and armed.

Smart home technology can be useful when it comes to heating and cooling a property, as programmable thermostats can learn your schedule behavior, warming up a property just before you get home and lowering the temperature while you are at work. The article also points out that smart technology can also tell you of the optimal times to run electrical appliances, giving real-time feedback on energy consumption to help keep energy costs low.

One area where smart technology might be particularly useful is in the case of water leaks as apparently nearly a quarter of home claims submitted to Allstate Canada between 2010 and 2015 were as the result of water damage. With the use of digital water leak sensors, it can be possible to prevent or limit the damage by receiving early alerts. Theft is another common type of home insurance claim and the use of lighting systems or motion sensors or cameras showing real-time images can all help protect your home while you are away.

There are numerous solutions to choose from and smart technology is becoming far more widely accepted. While some technologies may be expensive, others are relatively affordable.
