5 Reasons Every Home Buyer Should See the Garage before Buying a House

By Mike Wheatley | January 18, 2016

When looking for a home, the garage is usually the last part of the house that home buyers see. It doesn’t have that much of a big impact as compared to the living room or the master’s bedroom. However, the garage is also an important part of the house that needs to be looked at. It should be among the first rooms that you have to take a look at.

There are reasons why potential home buyers have to check the garage before making a final decision. Here’s why:

It adds value to the home.

Buying a house is a big financial decision. It is an investment that you and your family makes, if done right. When you bought the right house, you can sometime earn extra thousands than what you paid for. If this is the end goal that you want to achieve, then it is necessary to check every aspect of the house including the garage. A house without a garage does not sell as quickly as those with garages. A big garage with a residential garage door in good condition can add extra 10 percent to the overall value of the home. This does not include the extra features that you might install, like security features and others. Ensure that the garage has ample of space and can fit in at least two cars.

Extra storage.

If you are already aware of the amount of items that you have, then it might be essential to take a peek of the garage beforehand. This is a must if you already have quite a lot of items in your attic. The garage is usually an ideal place for extra storage space, especially for tools. You need to inspect the garage and see if it already has cabinets in place. This can be a good feature to have as this makes organizing easier. If it doesn’t, look for a garage that has ample of space even when the car is parked already. This allows you to have extra space for storing your other items.

An extra living space.

A spacious garage is a haven for the handy people. A large and aptly located garage can be converted to an extra living space. This can be used to a home office, an extra guestroom and other things. There’s a lot of things that you can do to a garage. Conversions are very common projects and doable for any homeowner. So, if you’re looking into converting a part of your home, then check out what the garage looks like. This can be a fun project to undertake with the family.

For multiple cars.

With a big family, it is almost imperative to check how big the garage is. Most homes today have a one-car or two-car garage. If you have three or more vehicles, then you should look for a bigger garage. This should be the first thing you need to check when scouting for a new home. Unless you are willing to park your car outside, then you have to prioritize the garage space. It is best to bring your car when you’re seeing the house and driving it up to the garage to check if it fits.

Distance from garage to kitchen.

Don’t forget to check the distance from the garage to the kitchen, if you’re doing the groceries yourself. This is bit is oftentimes neglected by a lot of homeowners who end up complaining how far they have to carry the groceries. You don’t want to spend a lot of time bringing the groceries to the kitchen. Most homes have garages found adjacent to the garage. However, this might not be the case for other houses. So ensure that the garage is near the kitchen so your regular grocery walk won’t seem forever.
