Smart Tech Adoption Aided by Voice Control

By Allison Halliday | November 8, 2017

A recent article in Computer Weekly.com highlights how voice control is impacting smart home connected products. The article points out that voice control is an important factor in influencing people to purchase connected products as more manufacturers introduce this feature.

One of the biggest barriers to people buying more smart devices has been a fragmented framework, where often some devices will not work with others. The introduction of voice-activated products that are compatible with well-known virtual assistants including Alexa will help increase the interest in smart home products, expanding their integration in the home. Last year a survey showed that people wanted a more integrated smart home system and the use of virtual assistants that are voice-activated is forecast to reach $2.1 billion, as increasingly consumers recognize the convenience of being able to control devices in this manner.

Voice personal assistants that are compatible with smart products will help to simplify everyday tasks, making it easier to fully automate a home. Using voice control for tasks such as turning off and on the lights or adjusting the thermostat could be particularly useful for the older generation who may not necessarily have access to a smartphone or who might not be as mobile.

Amazon recently introduced a feature that has big implications for home security cameras. Instead of accessing the camera through an app, users can ask Alexa to show the camera on the nearest connected device. Now their connected speaker, Amazon Echo Plus can also act as a home hub, connecting home devices and creating a platform.

Nowadays many devices are cheaper to purchase and can easily be installed by homeowners. Those that can be activated by voice commands show considerable opportunity for market growth. When properly used these devices can help owners to remotely monitor their homes and some can even notify homeowners if they have a leak or other problem within the home. These types of smart home products could potentially help to reduce insurance premiums.

Globally, the smart home market was estimated to be worth approximately $24.1 billion last year but by 2022, this figure is expected to reach approximately $53.45 billion. While Amazon may be currently dominating the voice-controlled speaker sector, there are many other manufacturers who are looking to get in on the action. Brand loyalty may mean that consumers keep Amazon at the top of the list for a while, but there are a number of lower-priced voice assisted speakers coming onto the market.
