3 Helpful Tips for New and Ambitious Real Estate Agents

By Allison Halliday | December 8, 2016

Being a real estate agent is no easy business. It’s often a lot of hard work and dealing with failure.

Newly licensed agents are excited to begin a new career and start making money right out the gates. While this can be the case, sometimes it takes time to get things rolling.

It can be a tough world for fresh and ambitious real estate agents. Below are some good tips that can help navigate your new profession and thrive.

Find a Mentor

The best thing any new real estate agent can do is find a mentor – someone who’s been through the trials and tribulations and knows what it takes.

Lots of larger brokerages offer mentorship programs, which is a huge incentive for newer agents. You get the chance to work alongside some of the best in the industry, watching their work ethic and gaining significant insight on how they do business.

If that’s not your case, it’s imperative that you seek out someone to be able to mentor you. Going at it alone is a surefire way to fail much more than you need to, which can be very demoralizing in a new field.

When It Comes to Lead Generation, Do What Works

Different strategies work for different people. Certainly not every lead-generation method is going to work for you as a new agent, but it’s key that you at least try the ones that have proven the test of time. Open houses are one such tactic. Another is consistently calling potential buyers or leads given to you.

One method that works exceptionally well in any business is having a website for additional lead generation. In your location, it can be fairly easy to outrank other real estate agents with just a basic SEO (search engine optimization) strategy. Once your website is up and running, use a website SEO analysis tool to determine what your competitors are doing and how you can beat them.

There are many great beginner SEO guides out there to get you started.

Always Do the Right Thing

Most new real estate agents expect to be in the business for the long haul. This means always doing the right thing for your clients. Sometimes that means putting their interests before your own. Don’t talk a couple into buying an expensive home simply because it means a bigger paycheck for you. If you’re genuine and help your clients in the best way possible, the payoff might not be as big in the short run, but the long run will pay huge dividends.

Many successful real estate agents don’t have to focus heavily on marketing and lead generation simply because of the amount of referrals they get. People love sending business to agents who are honest and kind.

When a newlywed couple buys a home and their friends are looking for one as well, who do you think they’re going to refer them to? Certainly not the jerk who ripped them off.

Keep the Faith

Last but not least, this could be the most important tip of the bunch. You will fail, but there are greener pastures on the other side of the fence. If you’ve found a mentor, almost all of them will openly tell you about their biggest failures. Often times it’s these stories that they learned the most from. The ultimate goal of a mentor is to fail less, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Learn to expect failure and look at it as a learning experience. You’ll be much more likely to succeed if you learn from your mistakes instead of letting them discourage you.

It can be intimidating to be a new real estate agent. Often times, you’re a small fish in a big pond. Follow the tips above, and you will have a much greater chance of success than your peers.
