JOPLIN, Mo. — Nikki Ange, an environmental scientist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Norfolk District, and Garrett Wickham, an environmental protection specialist from Portland District, use satellite imagery and the few remaining landmarks to locate properties that require assessment surveys. The assessments, conducted before debris removal operations, identify the types and extent of debris, potential hazards, and vegetation and structures present on the property. To date, USACE contractors have removed more than 1.15 million cubic yards of debris from public rights-of-way and private property damaged or destroyed by the EF-5 tornado that struck the city May 22.
